Phil Johnson started as a financial planner because he wanted to help people. For years he heard people say things like ‘I’ll never be able to retire’. These people have fallen into the trap of believing that financial freedom is something which is out of their control, and this simply isn’t true. Anyone can realize their goals as long as they’re willing to create a plan and stick to it. His passion is educating his clients so that they can truly understand and take control of their finances, and create holistic plans which address not only the need to accumulate wealth, but also the best way to protect it.”
Phil was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. Phil is a Certified Financial Planner® (CFP®) who enjoys playing soccer, hiking, biking, and above all exploring the great outdoors with his two sons.

1:00 PM – OT & Aging-in-Place
What is “aging-in-place”? Isn’t it just living out your life at home? How do you know if that’s the best option for you? What if you want to live somewhere else with social and community support? What are the options, and what resources and community supports are available? When do you involve an occupational therapist? Answers to these questions will be provided during this introduction to the aging-in-place process and options for home accessibility, adaptive/medical equipment, community resources and alternative living options.
Catharine Eckersley is an occupational therapist and the owner/director of Valley to Peak OT Consulting, a private OT practice in Calgary, Alberta. With a Master in Occupational Therapy (University of British Columbia, 2016), a Master of Arts in Physical Education & Recreation (University of Alberta, 2012) and Honors Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology (University of Western Ontario, 2010), Catharine brings an extensive educational background to her practice. Along with that Catharine is proud to be on the Board of Directors for ARK (Accessibility Renovations for Kids), a Calgary-based charity which provides free home accessibility renovations to children with mobility limitations. Since 2018, Catharine has worked daily in the urban and rural homes of her fellow Albertans, increasing their quality of life, independence, and safety. Covering an ~200km travel radius of Calgary, Catharine has developed an expansive network of trusted vendors, contractors, and healthcare providers. In 2022 Catharine grew her team, which prides itself on assisting clients and their families to navigate the healthcare system and resources, and to provide peace of mind. Excellent services, including flexible weekend, evening, and virtual appointments for Albertans, resulted in Valley to Peak being awarded the 2023 Consumer Choice Award for Southern Alberta, the 2022 Community Votes Calgary Platinum Award, and being rated as a top occupational therapy business (The Best Calgary, 2022). With no referral necessary, Catharine looks forward to connecting with you directly to discuss your occupational therapy goals.

2:00 PM – Don’t Be the Low Hanging Fruit for Scammers
Your phone rings and it’s an authoritative sounding person telling you they are from Microsoft tech support. You get an email paying for a iPad that you didn’t buy. Your grandchild calls you desperately needing money.
These type of tech oriented scams are happening with increasing frequency and many Canadians have fallen for them. Artificial Intelligence is just making things worse, as for example, the bad guys clone your grandchild’s voice to be even more convincing. Tom Keenan spends a lot of time researching scams and scammers and is seen frequently in the media talking about them. In this fast-paced session he’ll go over the latest ones and how you avoid becoming the victim.
Tom Keenan is both a seasoned IT professional and a popular professor at the University of Calgary. He taught Canada’s first computer security course in 1977 and was involved in the creation of the country’s first computer crime laws. He has spoken on five continents and is the author of over 2,000 academic and professional publications. A frequent guest on radio and television programs, Tom has served as an expert witness in civil and criminal cases and is known for his ability to demystify complex subjects and tease out the “news you can use.”
His 2014 book, Technocreep: The Surrender of Privacy and the Capitalization of Intimacy is a Canadian best-seller and currently ranks in the top twenty in Amazon.ca’s Technology & Society category. He is the current Chair of the Information and Communications Technology Council of Canada and a Fellow of the Canadian Information Processing Society and the Canada Global Affairs Institute.
