Out of School Care

The Dalhousie Out of School Care program is a licensed and accredited child care program servicing families who live or interact within the community of Dalhousie. We provide a high quality before and after school care program for children in Kindergarten through Grade Six.

Our program currently serves families with children attending Dalhousie Community Kindergarten, Dalhousie Elementary School (International Spanish Academy), St Dominic Fine Arts School and West Dalhousie Elementary School.

For children attending Dalhousie Community Kindergarten before and after school care is provided in the Dalhousie Community Centre (same building) from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.

For children attending Dalhousie Elementary School (International Spanish Academy) before and after school care is provided at our Dallyn Street building located at 4448 Dallyn Street NW. (The small beige building adjacent to the school playground.) Hours of operation are 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.

For children attending the Dalhousie Elementary School (International Spanish Academy) Walking Program before and after school care is provided at the Dalhousie Community Centre located at 5432 Dalhart Road beginning at 7:00 am. Children are walked to and from school by program staff. Care is provided until 6:00 pm.

For children attending St Dominic Fine Arts School care is provided at the Dalhousie Community Centre beginning at 7:00 am. Children will be walked to and from school by program staff.

For children in Grades 1 – 6 attending West Dalhousie Elementary School our before and after school care program is located in the school gymnasium and operates from 7:00 am – 6:00 pm.

For AM Kindergarten children attending West Dalhousie Elementary care is provided in the school gymnasium beginning at 7:00 am. After school care will be provided via a supervised walking program from the school to the Dalhousie Community Centre where care is provided until 6:00 pm.

*Please note that our program does not provide care for children registered in afternoon Kindergarten classes. (subject to change)

Children attending other area schools are welcome to register in our Dalhousie Community Centre program, but parents must arrange for their child to be dropped off and picked up from our program.

Additionally, the Dalhousie Community Centre offers:

  • Spring Day Camp
  • Weekly theme-based day camps during July and August

About Our Organization

The Dalhousie Community Association (DCA) is a licensed, registered non-profit association. The Dalhousie Out of School Care (DOSC) program is operated by the DCA as a service to families who live or interact within our community. The Dalhousie Out of School Care program prides itself on providing high quality childcare services and is committed to providing a rich variety of activities in a safe and healthy environment for your children.

Licensing and Accreditation

The Dalhousie Out of School Care program is licensed and meets all government regulations in the areas of health, safety and care.

Accreditation represents a standard of excellence in childcare which exceeds licensing requirements. By voluntarily undertaking this rigorous process childcare programs commit to establishing and maintaining a high standard of care. Childcare programs are granted accreditation status by the province of Alberta once they have worked through a prescribed and rigorous process and successfully demonstrated that they are able to provide a quality of programming and level of care in keeping with the government of Alberta accreditation standards.

Our Philosophy

The Dalhousie Out of School Care program is committed to providing a safe, caring, healthy environment for children. We support the developmental needs of children by providing a balanced program of planned activities together with free play and exploration designed to promote social, emotional, intellectual and physical growth and creativity.

The Dalhousie Out of School Care program has an open door policy and encourages parent participation. We foster an attitude of mutual respect, open communication and support between staff, children and families.

The Dalhousie Out of School Care program encourage staff members to work effectively as a team and to continually update their skills and knowledge through formal and informal staff development.

The Dalhousie Out of School Care program values diversity. We believe that every child is unique and is entitled to the opportunity to develop personal responsibility and social skills, to learn to problem solve, and to learn about other races and cultures.

The Dalhousie Out of School Care program aims to develop and maintain strong links with the local community by participating in community events, utilizing available community resources, and engaging in community based service projects.

Our Staff

The Dalhousie Out of School Care program is committed to hiring child care leaders who have a passion for working with children and who are committed to excellence in child care. Our staff members come from diverse backgrounds and blend child care experience with their unique talents and personal interests to provide a rich and diverse program.

In accordance with Provincial Licensing Regulations, all staff members must be certified through the Child Development Branch of Alberta Children and Youth Services. They are also required to hold a valid First Aid Certificate and must acquire and maintain a current Police Information and Vulnerable Sector Check.

Our staff members come from a variety of educational backgrounds and many of them hold degrees in education or related fields of study. The Dalhousie Out of School Care program supports staff development and encourages its staff members to take advantage of workshops, seminars and other professional development opportunities on a regular basis.

Dalhousie Out of School Care fees are payable to the Dalhousie Community Association. If registration is 30 days or more prior to the start of service a deposit of 50% of the monthly registration fee is required at the time of registration. If registration is within 30 days of the start of service the monthly fee is payable in full at the time of registration.

Monthly program fees include service on non-instructional days (e.g. Professional Development and Parent/Teacher Conference days).

Weekly day camps may be offered by the Dalhousie Community Centre for an additional fee during school breaks. Detailed information about day camps may be found under Programs and Membership on our Children’s Day Camps page.

Registration

Three re-registration sessions will be offered for children who are currently attending Dalhousie Out of School Care. These re-registration sessions will take place on the following dates and times:

Monday, February 5th 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Wednesday, February 7th 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Monday, February 12th 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Parents must sign-up for the re-registration session of their choice at their child’s program location. No children, other than those currently registered in our program, may be registered at these sessions.

Parents will be provided access to an online registration form which they may print and bring to the re-registration session. Registration forms will also be available at the time of registration. Children currently registered in our program are guaranteed space until Monday, February 12th at 8:00 pm.

Registration for children starting Kindergarten in September 2018 will open on Monday, February 5th. Children must be 4.5 years of age by September 2018 and be registered in a morning Kindergarten class.

Registration requirements include proof of the child’s age, up-to-date immunization records, and written documentation from the school confirming the child’s registration in a morning Kindergarten class.

Registration for or children in Grades 1 – 6 who are not currently registered in our program will open on Tuesday, February 20th.

A deposit of 50% of the monthly fee is required to complete registration. Your receipt showing payment of the deposit will serve as proof of registration. If registration is cancelled, deposit fees will be refunded up to and including July 31st 2018. An administration fee of $50.00 will be retained.

Fees are currently under review for 2018-2019.

A Dalhousie Community Association membership is required to register for the Dalhousie Out of School Care program. The annual membership fee is $32. As the Dalhousie Community Association’s fiscal year runs from September 1 to August 31 fall program participants will be required to purchase a new membership. Click Here to purchase a membership.

Hours of Operation

The hours of operation for all program locations are from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Childcare Program Closures

The Dalhousie Out of School Care program follows the CBE calendar and is closed during Christmas break, Spring break and Teacher’s Convention.  

Additionally, we are closed on the following days:

  • Victoria Day
  • Canada Day
  • Heritage Day
  • Labour Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Remembrance Day
  • Christmas Day
  • Boxing Day

Note: In the event that Christmas Eve falls on a week day the program will close at 12:00 noon.
